The Nature of Political Representation in Regional Parliaments of Ethiopia: a study on Benishangul Gumuz Regional Sate Council.
Since the time of adoption of ethnic federalism in Ethiopia, the politics of indigenous and non-indigenous dichotomy has been serving as a basis for political representation and exclusion of ethnic groups in regional parliaments and their respective standing committees. The aim of this research project is to analyse the historical trends, contemporary challenges and future implications of political representation or exclusion in regional parliaments of Ethiopia, by focusing on the case of Benishangul Gumuz Regional Council. Combining qualitative and quantitative research methodologies, the project examines the nature of ethnic and gender representation or exclusion in the parliament of the region. In doing so, the nature of relationship between the representatives and their respective constituents, the way parliamentary oversight is being implemented in the region as well as the attitude of the wider community towards the degree of ethnic and gender representation in Benishangul Gumuz Regional Parliament (State Council) is explored.
