Deeper democracy enhances human rights, economic equity, and elections – which in turn drive development. This research project aims to assess the perception, role and barriers in relation to deepening democracy in Ethiopia through empirical data collection and analysis from Addis Ababa and Dire Dawa, the two chartered cities of the country. The study applies a mixed-methods approach that combines both quantitative and qualitative data collected from residents, media and political party members. Multi-stage random sampling is used to select participants from amongst the residents in Addis and Dire Dawa; while a purposive sampling technique is used to select participants from the media and political parties. Data collection takes the form of questionnaires, in-depth interviews and focus group discussions; and analysis will make use of thematic and descriptive techniques. The findings of the study are to be disseminated through film production and publications.
