Mikiyas Bekele Kidane (PI), Solen Gemechu Megersa (Co-I), Abel Wabella Sugebo (Co-I), Michael Million (Co-I)
CSOs are a critical bridge between the public and their Parliamentarians. This project explores the culture of representation across the micro- and meso-levels in Ethiopia, with respect to community engagement with CSOs, and CSO participation in federal law-making processes, the better to understand the challenges and opportunities around deepening democracy in the country. Mikiyas B. Kidane (@MickyEthiopia), Lecturer in Law, and his Ambo University colleague Solen G. Megersa (@solen_gemechu) will lead on data collection and analysis for the project, and develop a final project report. The report and its findings will be shared and discussed at a workshop and panel discussion with invited scholars, activists and community members, who together will develop a network and collective action plan to advance participatory democracy in Ethiopia. Journalist Abel Wabella (@Abelpoly; http://addiszeybe.com), managing director of the newspaper Addis Zeybe will assist the team in disseminating news and media articles arising from their research activities and findings, and in creating impact around their advocacy for more inclusive and participatory democracy. In addition, creative art professional, Michael Million, will write, direct and produce a short video that can be used to raise awareness of, and generate dialogue about, the critical need for micro- and meso-level participation in national political decision-making processes.
